2,000 Bells Later: Celebrating a Milestone for Mission Wind Bells
What started as a simple piece of inspiration back in 1980 has grown into a major milestone. I've just completed the 2,000th Mission Wind Bell, a huge achievement for my series of metal art.
To celebrate, I created a special 2,000th edition bell that's a true statement piece. At 6 inches in diameter and 28 inches long, it's crafted from bronze and steel with a dark bronze patina, giving it a powerful, resonant sound that truly commands attention.
The journey began decades ago during a trip to Hatch, New Mexico. I was immediately drawn to a rustic ceramic wind bell in a small craft shop. I brought it home, and it’s been a source of inspiration for my metalwork ever since. About five years ago, I started experimenting, creating a metal version that captured the original's rustic charm. The first bell I made was named San Estevan, in honor of the historic San Estévan del Rey Mission Church in New Mexico.
That single bell sparked the entire Mission Wind Bell series. The journey from one to 2,000 has been one of continuous exploration and refinement. Each bell is a reflection of that original inspiration, carrying a piece of history and a powerful voice. This series has become a significant movement for me and a new direction for art in metal mediums.
